March 29, 2009 by Kristen

In honor of mothers everywhere, Walenstein Symphony Orchestra will be presenting its 2nd Annual Mother’s Day concert on Saturday, May 9, 2009, at 7:30 p.m., in the Amaturo Theater at Broward Center for the Performing Arts, and Sunday, May 10, 2009, at 3:00 p.m. at the Colony Theater in South Beach.

The program will spotlight the works of the great Austrian composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, which include the Idomeneo Overture, Twelve German Dances, Symphony No. 40 in G Minor, and Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra, featuring the talented 17-year-old bassoonist and high school senior at JP Taravella High School, Barbara Bentley. Additionally, finalists of the 2nd Annual Walenstein Essay Competition, students between grades 5 and 8, will read their essays in honor of their mothers to the audience with orchestra accompaniment and receive various awards/prizes.  The orchestra will perform under the baton of Haitian conductor, Jean Rudy Perrault, Orchestra Director at the University of Minnesota Duluth.

Ticket prices are $10, $25, $37, $52, $75, and are available on the Walenstein Symphony Orchestra website at www.walensteinmusic.org, the Broward Center box office at 954/462-0222, the Colony Theater box office at 305/674-1040, Ticketmaster, Culture Shock Miami, and a limited amount of Golden Tickets.

Composed primarily of exceptional local professional musicians, talented high school and college students, Walenstein Symphony Orchestra was created two years ago as the newest entity of Walenstein Musical Organization. The not-for-profit organization was founded in 1996 to provide music education and performance opportunities to the Haitian community. In 1999, it expanded its mission to include other communities.

Walenstein Musical Organization is led by Executive Director, Romel Joseph, Haitian professional violinist, who received a Fullbright scholarship and attended the Juilliard School of Music in New York City, where he earned his Master’s Degree in Music and Violin Performance.
